Introduction to Literature Alive Online

Literature Alive Online is a unique website that represents a collection of high quality reference resources related to the literary works of twenty-six Caribbean-Canadian authors of English and French heritage. The collection is based on the literature of selected award-winning Caribbean-Canadian authors that represent the evolution of three generations of literary achievement.  Accordingly, some of the authors take more traditional literary approaches; others belong to the generation that became radicalized in the 70s and 80s. Remarkably, the collection also honours the published works of some contemporary Dub Poets and the Spoken Word, Hip Hop artists that represent today’s urban young Canadian voices with a Caribbean heritage.

        Andre Alexis

Andrealexis

Andre Alexis was born in Trinidad in the fifties and lived there until he was four years old when his family migrated to Canada.  He grew up in Ottawa as well as in the south-western Ontario town of Petrolia. In 1993, he moved to live in Parkdale in downtown Toronto.

Alexis recounts how, in his mid-twenties and with just one published short story to his credit, he was working in an Ottawa bookstore when by chance he met the Canadian literary icon, Norman Levine.  Although their actual encounter was extremely brief, Alexis was touched by Levine’s obvious humanity.  He has said that as a result of this meeting he was encouraged to continue on his chosen path as a writer.
